In this post, I will show you how to install WordPress locally on Windows pc. XAMPP is a PHP development software which allows you to install WordPress locally for free. That way, you design your WordPress website without having to pay a penny for hosting. XAMPP is open-source (completely free) and easy to install and I will show you step-by-step how it’s done.
Download XAMPP software
Visit apachefriends.org to download the XAMPP software. Here, you get to download based on your operating system. In this tutorial, you’re going to be using Windows so download the latest version for windows.
After the download is complete, double click the downloaded file and you will be taken to the XAMPP setup wizard. Sometimes, you might get a warning notification about an “activated user account control“. No problem, click “ok” and to the setup wizard, click “Next” to continue. Next, you are taken to another area in the setup process where you’ll be asked to check and uncheck some components. The goal here is to select the component you’d want to use to install WordPress and clear the components that are useless. Uncheck everything except PHP, MySQL and phpMyAdmin. Reason being that the localhost used for testing WordPress needs MySQL for its database, PHP to run smoothly and phpMyAdmin to manually create its database. Click “Next” after setting
Next, you get to select a folder. It’s best to keep it as it is; in C:\xampp. Click “Next” to continue. Select language of your choice “Next“, check the box that says “Learn more about bitnami for XAMPP”. Bitnami for XAMPP provides free installs that can install WordPress and we are going to use Bitnami. The setup is ready to begin installing XAMPP on your computer. Click “Next” to continue. It then starts installing. During Installation, it automatically redirects you to the bitnami page where you get the Bitnami module. These bitnami modules are what we are going to use to install WordPress on their local computer.
NB: It will only redirect you if the “Learn more about bitnami for XAMPP” box is checked.
In case of any Windows security alerts, just check the boxes for public and private networks and click “Allow access”. Once the installation is complete, check the box for “Do you want to start the control panel now” and click “Finish“. It directs you to the XAMPP control panel. There, you start the “Apache” and “MySQL” modules; these are the modules you need. Again, if the Windows security alert pops-up, check the boxes for public and private networks and click “Allow access“.
Next step is to open your browser and type in “localhost“. It takes you to a page where you manage the local server by XAMPP. Congratulations! you have successfully installed XAMPP on your local computer.
Download Bitnami modules to install WordPress
You can choose to signup to bitnami or click “No thanks, just take me to the download”. Either way, the download starts. When the download is completed, you click on it to open the file. Select the installation language of your choice and click “ok“. It takes to the setup wizard. Click “Next” to continue. The folder location has already been chosen so click “Next“. Now, you create an admin account; your login, real name, email address and other details. Then click “Next” to continue, set your blog name, “Next“, do not check box for configuring mail support, “Next”, uncheck the box for launching WordPress in cloud with bitnami and click “Next“.
And now, setup is now ready to begin the installation. Click “Next” to continue. After installation is complete, check the box for “Launch Bitnami WordPress module” and click “Finish“. After that, it redirects you to your local WordPress site. To access your WordPress dashboard, simply add “/wp-login.php/” to the website URL and it takes you to the login area. You put-in your credentials; the details you registered earlier. And now, you are in your dashboard! Now, you have created your first WordPress website locally on your pc. You can test themes, plugins, ideas or projects that need a lot of modifications before they go live.
However, if you want to install your WordPress website on a live server, you have to get hosting and domain name. Hosting simply is like renting online space and the domain name is simply the name of your website. You can get hosting and domain name here at Bluehost
